Olathe City Council Approves STAR Bond Plan for Chiefs Headquarters Development

The Olathe City Council has unanimously approved a STAR bond proposal, paving the way for the Kansas City Chiefs to establish their new headquarters and practice facility in Olathe. The decision, reached during the council meeting on February 3, 2026, allows the city to pledge certain new tax revenues generated within a designated project area to help repay STAR bonds that will finance the development associated with the Chiefs’ relocation.

The proposed site for the new facility is a 165-acre plot of undeveloped land at College Boulevard and Ridgeview Road. This strategic location is expected to bolster local economic growth and enhance community engagement by bringing the renowned NFL team closer to Olathe residents.

STAR bonds, or Sales Tax and Revenue bonds, are a financing tool that enables municipalities to issue bonds for the development of major commercial, entertainment, and tourism projects. The revenue generated from increased sales and use taxes within the project area is then used to repay the bonds over time.

During the public hearing preceding the vote, several residents expressed concerns about the transparency of the process and the potential impact on local resources. However, city officials emphasized that the project is designed to be a win-win for both the community and the Chiefs organization. Mayor John Bacon stated, “There’s really nothing to lose here,” highlighting the anticipated economic benefits and increased visibility for Olathe.

The approval of the STAR bond plan marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to bring the Chiefs’ operations to Kansas. As the project progresses, further details regarding construction timelines and community involvement opportunities are expected to be shared with the public.
